President’s Message: The Christmas Party was well attended and there were many thoughtful gifts for the gift swap. There were many door prizes thanks to Jerry Osmundson. The food was outstanding thanks to Judy Osmundson, Shirley Thomas, Judy Taylor and Gay Austin who organized and executed the whole thing and of course all of you who brought the dishes of food. The party was well attended as usual with over 60 attendees. Pictures of the party are posted on the web site. There was a drawing for a scholarship to the John Campbell School for those who made ornaments for the Children’s Hospital tree, won by Jerry Bickenbach. Congratulations Jerry! Pat Johnson will coordinate with Jerry to get him scheduled for the North Carolina trip. Thanks to Nelson Brooks for putting together a nominating list of officers for 2006. The elected officers were: President – Dave Chanslor Vice President – Pat Johnson Secretary – James Armstrong Treasurer – Phillip Duffy Directors – Larry Thomas, Tim Austin, Bill Cleage, Jim Black, Bruce Gibson, Worth Barham, Pat Connell As outgoing president, Jerry Osmundson will serve on the board as well. Web Master - Harold Jones Thanks to all who served as officers last year, especially to Jerry Osmundson who served two years as president and did a great job. The New Year should be another good year for AWA. We had 20 new members join in 2005 with two joining in January 2006. Will Pate is taking over the mentoring and training duties and will approach these new members about turning skill building and plugging in to club activities. Thanks to Bill West for his past and continuing efforts in this area. It needs to be said that many members willingly participate in helping new woodturners (like me) learn and improve. The next meeting is Saturday January 14th and will feature a "round robin" turning event with some of our resident experts demonstrating and educating members on turning skills. Will Pate will do Christmas ornaments, Pat Johnson and Nelson Brooks will do tool sharpening Phillip Duffy will do goblets and Jerry Osmundson will do lidded boxes. There will be one or two more turners in the round robin, Bruce Gibson and Worth Barham but their demos will be a surprise – to me at least.. It should be great fun and a learning experience. The February meeting program can only be described as "comic relief" as yours truly will demonstrate how to turn a "winged jar" from an article in Woodturning Design magazine. It should be fun if you don’t sit in the front row! Future programs are being planned by Pat Johnson and will be announced later. We hope to get the full newsletter back up starting in February. Jerry Hanchey has agreed to put the newsletter together if members will give him input. We will need input on activities and other news related to association members to help Jerry have something to publish. I will provide the "message" each month. I think we will just publish on the web and bring copies to the meeting rather than having a mail out. I will talk to the board and Jerry about it. A separate e-mail has gone out to members about the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital silent auction. Please bring a turning to give to James Vaughn for the auction to raise money for the hospital.. Jane Saylor’s shop equipment is for sale as has been announced and is listed in the members only section of the web site since they indicated that they wanted AWA members to have first pick of the equipment for sale. The Southern States VI Symposium will be held on April 28-30 2006 at the Georgia Mountains Conference Center in Gainesville, GA. Pat Johnson will bring brochures to the meeting. Featured Demonstrators · Keith Gotschall - Colorado· Larry Hasiak - Florida· Dave Hout - Ohio· Ernie Newman – AustraliaThere will be a drawing at the January meeting for a scroll chuck for those who qualified by making ornaments. I look forward to the coming year and I know I can count on your help to make it another successful year for AWA. Dave Chanslor, President AWA 2006
