everyone
tuned in to our activities even when they can’t make all the meetings
keeps our association alive and well.
The newsletter will be published on our website by Harold Jones
each month before the meeting and will be mailed to those who don’t
have computer access. The January meeting was very good meeting with 65 people attending. We had eight new members join the AWA. Pat’s “round robin” woodturning program was well received and we all learned from our woodturning pros. Bruce Gibson turned candlesticks, Worth Braham turned lidded boxes, and Phil Duffy turned goblets and collected 2006 club dues at the same time. Nelson Brooks demonstrated tool sharpening techniques while Jerry Osmundson showed how to chase threads on lidded boxes and gave the audience hands-on experience. Will Pate held a large audience turning Christmas ornaments Everyone liked the format and had a good time.
A
drawing was held for a One-Way Chuck for those who qualified by turning
ornaments for the Christmas tree for the Children’s Hospital.
Cliff Daniels was the lucky winner.
Jerry and Judy Osmundson took care of the drawing.
There seems to be a lot of interest in a future raffle for
turning equipment as we did last year.
We will sell tickets until we have enough money to pay for the
item we raffle off then have

Will
Pate talked about his training plans for 2006, continuing on from Bill
West’s great track record in that area, giving Bill a chance to rest a
little ( I don’t see Bill resting much though – too much energy!)
Will is going to test the interest of members for classes in more
advanced subjects. I hear
that the ornament turning class is a sell out already.
We will report training schedules and results in
this newsletter. As I mentioned last month, The Southern States Symposium is coming up on April 28-30. AWA is responsible for maintaining one room where symposium demonstrations take place. We furnish a TV monitor and camera for optimal audience viewing and we furnish a member as camera operator and keep the wood shavings picked up. We will be signing up volunteers for this starting at the next meeting. The symposium is in Gainesville GA and is a great experience with national and internationally known turners demonstrating wood turning techniques. Pat Johnson is coordinating our activities for this and needs our support. The Homewood Senior Center is planning to do some remodeling in the room where we meet this winter. They |
will
be installing a dance floor as dancing is a big activity at the center.
It will take two weeks and is to be scheduled in February or March,
as I understand. It may
conflict with our meeting one for those months and require us to go to an
alternate site for that month but they will try to avoid that.
The point here is that you should check the web site or your e-mail
for a notice on where we will meet if we have to do something.
If you don’t have web access, check with a member who does.
If we get enough notice we can send a post card to those who
don’t have an e-mail address. The
program for February is “Turning Winged Jars” by one of the most
notorious Woodturners in Wilsonville Alabama- me.
Come join the fun and watch to see if I screw it up!
Future programs are pending and Pat has good programs in the works.

Yes
it’s true, I’ve been duped into accepting yet another job for which
I’m ill prepared. But I do
want to thank Dave for the opportunity and acknowledge the “strong
arm” technique he has so masterfully applied once again.
I’m absolutely convinced that if he is as successful with all of
his club taskings as he was with me, then our club is in for a year of
great successes. |
We
do have some talented and willing members in our club and for that we are
all thankful. But as I embark
on this task of keeping a newsletter that’s readable and interesting, I
will need help from as many of you as are willing.
“Input” is the key ingredient.
Articles about things you’ve learned or seen, a picture or
“tip” that we might enjoy, and certainly, items for sale that someone
might have a use for are all “kinds of input” that I will welcome. |
Finally, I’d like to say a special thank you to James Armstrong for the great job he does with the photos he takes and the commentary he attaches to each picture. When I view his layout on our Web Site, it reminds me of how many good turners we have in our club and often I see things I missed during the meeting. Keep up the great work James. |
